ANOTHER BIO
(dated April 10, 2003)

I was assigned as the CO of the 595th Clearing Company at Smiley Barracks from September 1962 until May 1963 at which time the Army again "got short" of doctors. I was transferred to the 761st Medical Detachment at Gerszewski and was CO there until I got out of the Army in June of 1966. At night we all took MOD at the 3rd and I ran the OB clinic there on Thursday afternoons. The commander of the 3rd was John Geisler and he left at about the same time that I did. He went to California and did a psychiatry residency and I have lost contact with him. I went to Albany, New York where I completed a radiology residency. I stayed in the Albany area and retired four years ago as director of Medical Imaging from St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady, New York.

I would be interested in hearing from people that were there and although I can’t make the reunion in San Francisco this year may eventually make one!

Dr. Donald R. Morton, Commanding Officer at the 761st from May 1963 to June 1966

ANOTHER BIO
(dated March 14, 2002)

William Husband, age 60, passed away January 29, 2001. He was discharged in 1972 and owned Husband’s Drug in Belle Fourche, South Dakota until 1983. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy in 1982 and owned The Medicine Shoppe since 1983 in Bell Fourche. He served three terms as a school board member of Belle Fourch School District from 1984 to 1993 and was board President from 1988 to 1990.

Bill’s passions were fishing, golf, fishing, Civil War History, fishing, poker, fishing, Lewis & Clark History, but most of all, he loved our daughters and was so very proud of them. He insisted that they read instead of clean their rooms (that is what they told me anyway) or cuddle with their kittens. They were both Valedictorians if their high school classes so I guess the books were a good habit. Kimberly (born in 1969 while we were stationed in Karlsruhe) is Assistant Editor of Today’s Health & Wellness Magazine (Minnetonka, MN). Kim was graduated from the University of South Dakota, then got her Masters from the university of Maine in Orono at age 22. She was divorced in 2000 after almost four years of marriage. Lindsay was born in 1975 here in Bell Fourche, South Dakota. She and Jeff Brown were married in 1999. Lindsay is the Administrative Assistant to the Provost and Communications Coordinator at Tri-College University, Fargo/Moorhead. Jeff is the Technical Director at Moorhead State University in the Theatre Department. These two were graduated the same year from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota. Lindsay is taking post graduate courses part time pursuing another degree. I am proud to have been the wife of William J. Husband, Connie Husband.

Bill Husband, executive Officer, 3rd General Dispensary, October 1968 to October 1969

ANOTHER BIO
(dated March 14, 2002)

My daughter, Julia, was born in Frankfurt, is now 30, almost 31. Living in Los Angeles, in the process of getting divorced from the man she married in 1997, working in entertainment industry. Mary-Anne and I were divorced in 1974, and I married Louisa Rose, who I had dated one summer in 1959, in 1977. She has a daughter, Alissa, who I adopted in 2000, in honor of her wedding that summer (to a wonderful man). They are in North Carolina, where he is getting a PhD, and they had a baby, Jack, last August. Being a grandparent is much more fun than being a parent.

On the professional front: I went back to NYC after spending my last year in Frankfurt, and specialized in adolescent medicine. Eventually I became medical director of a new HMO in New York, then was recruited to Spokane, Washington for a similar position. From 1983 to 1998 I was President of a consumer-run, non-profit HMO here, retired from that, and now do consulting in healthcare. My wife is a writer – a couple of movies, a few plays, some lyrics, and three books we wrote together. We live on eight acres, overlooking a river valley. I used to talk about Karlsruhe days so much Louisa finally made me shut up about it. I’m really looking forward to seeing old friends.

For a number of years, while we were both in New York, I kept up my friendship with Dr. Murry Cohen, and also that whenever I visited San Francisco, I would look up Mike Knisely until he moved to Ohio in the mid-80’s.

Carl Sachjen’s reminiscences reminded me that in 1975, Murry Cohen and I made a trip to France, and on the spur of the moment decided to visit Smiley. Some of you may remember that Murry ended up receiving an Article 15 as part of a power struggle with Lee Sanders. It had been five years earlier, but the EM’s who greeted us when we showed up had heard of it, which made us celebrities.

Dr. Henry "Major" Berman, Physician at the 3rd, September 1968 to August 1970

p.s. I mentioned that my wife is a writer. I have been in a couple of her plays – in one, done in New York, off-off-Broadway, I played the part of an Army doctor. In the program, it said "Henry Berman’s only previous acting experience was being a major in the U.S. Army."

I am a Sr. Account Exec for a global training firm called Wilson Learning and I develop business and consult with Fortune 500 companies on how to solve their human performance problems: helping them to improve skills in sales, leadership, and customer service. We have consultants who deliver what I sell. Some projects wind up being in multiple languages around the world. I work virtually out of my home office and get to travel (mostly US East Coast) and occasionally elsewhere.

Have been married to Lee for 19 years. My son is now 27 and is here in Atlanta with two of my husband’s children from a former marriage. They are both in their twenties and through my step-daughter I have four grandchildren (yikes!).

I’m a court reporter in Maryland. After community college, I worked as a secretary/office manager of a small law firm for six years. I then became a government worker. I’m working with my fourth judge now – a woman, and have been doing court reporting for 22 years. I need 8 more years to reach my 30 year retirement. I enjoy my job very much even though it can be depressing, stressful and scary at times. We did have a tragedy on the courthouse parking lot – not in the courtroom like in Atlanta. After a divorce trial, the man went up to his car, got a shotgun out of his trunk and shot his ex-wife and her adult daughter. The wife died. The daughter would leave flowers and notes on the parking lot near the spot where her mom died, but I haven’t seen that in a while now. The only other semi-interesting thing that happened here is we had the Linda Tripp trial. In fact, the judge I work for now was the presiding judge in her case. I got to watch a bit of the trial. I have to say, Monica is very, very beautiful in person. Linda’s defense attorney, Joe Murtha, was a former law clerk of the previous judge I worked for, so I knew the attorney well. It was kind of surreal.

I grew up in Los Angeles and joined the Navy after graduating from high school. Made a European trip during the mid-sixties to visit family in Poland. Decided to study German in Munich and met a fraulein, fell in love, and got married. Came back to the US and lived in San Francisco. The marriage didn’t work out and we got divorced. I then spent most of the late 60’s and early 70’s living the "Hippy" life and searching for ? and living with almost every group except the "Moonies" and the "Krishnas". By process of elimination I decided to pick up and travel to Israel in 1978. Arrived in Israel and traveled around and volunteered to work on Kibbutzim, fell in LOVE with it, its People and everything about it so I decided to convert which took about a year to finalize.

Met my present wife in 1980, we were married and have brought into this world with God’s help seven beautiful children. We live in what is known as the West Bank but we call Shomron or translated Samaria, in the eternal Land of Israel.

Is the 3rd General Dispensary the descendant from the Third Medical Dispensary?  Was a Medical Tech (MOS 1123) and retired MSG as a 91B5H.   Wonder when the name was changed? Now live near Amsterdam, New York but will move to Beverly Hills, Florida soon.

Over the years I’ve been an OR Tech, Als instructor, and ambulance training officer. Also have 25 years as a Food Analyst in the fields of chemistry and microbiology, health examiner for insurance companies, and a moulage simulator (recognized by JAMA) teaching medical doctors how to simulate injuries.

Was a combat medical instructor for seventeen years teaching at Fort Meade, Maryland and just retired from the New York State Guard as a captain. Also worked at the Dr. Smith clinic at Haight Ashbury area of San Francisco in the sixties during a month vacation away from my lab job in New York.

I'm retired but quite active as a civil war re-enactor and have put on displays in Canada, England, and all across the United States. Was in the Civil War movies Gettysburg, Andersonville, and Gods and Generals. Gave a seminar to the Society of Civil War Surgeons (which I’m a member) in March 2003.

Just found out about the reunion. Was stationed at the 3rd General Dispensary from August 1991 to December 1992 and then moved to Vilsek. My name back then was Dawn M. High and I married right before I left there and my last name became Mulford. Now it is Dawn Gillespie. Was nineteen when I arrived in Germany and I must say that I have never met such great people since leaving there. Would love to attend the reunion and know a few that are attending.

Was the Patient Admin Specialist while I was there and arrived as E-1 and made E-4 before I left. I am now in the Delaware Army National Guard E-5 (got out for a few years) Active Duty AGR and working as a Human Resource NCO now. I have around ten years in and looking to fulfill the 20 year obligation to retire.

Both Vila and I are still working; we are so ready to semi-retire. Travis our youngest son is still living at home working full time at Comp-USA and going to college in the evening. Cody our oldest son is married and has two children Jordan 9 and Cole 5. We try and play golf in our free time but that seems to be less and less each year. Sorry I missed both past reunions but family plans and vacation time didn’t let it work out. I certainly enjoy all the pictures and e-mail you send. It brings back a lot of fond memories. Thanks for keeping us updated on the 3rd General.

Left Karlsruhe April 1973 and went back to Denver where I was when I went into the Army. Moved to St. Louis in 1975. Married in 1977. Had two kids, girl and a boy. They are now both in college. Got divorced in 1999 and I’ve got a girlfriend, Janet Giddens, and just bought a house in October 2003. Life is good.

ANOTHER BIO
(dated May 10, 2002)

Diane and I celebrated our 35th anniversary during December 2002. We have been very fortunate. Our children: John and Beth have grown up and left home. Beth is still single, living and working in Park City, Utah. She enjoys the mountains in both summer and winter. John has been married for over 2 years. He and Tara gave us our first grandchild on New Years day 2002, Conor. Diane loves being a grandmother!!!

I left Karlsruhe in early December of 1971. Diane met me at Fort Dix where we then traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to retrieve our car. It had been shipped there due to the East Coast dock strike of 1971. We drove home to Birmingham where I had to wait almost a year to get the courses I needed to graduate from college. I finished my BS in December 1972. The following summer I began school at UAB for training as a Physician Assistant in Medicine. Six months from finishing this 2-year program, I decided to apply to medical school. I completed the PA program at UAB on a Friday in June 1975 and started medical school the following Monday at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. I graduated in June of 1979 and immediately began my training in Emergency Medicine at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. I completed this in 1982. My initial job was in a community hospital ER in Knoxville, Tennessee. I remained there only until the following May, when I was asked to return to Columbia, to be on the faculty for the Emergency Medicine program. We remained there for the next 6 years. In 1988 I had the opportunity to move closer to home and accepted a position in Mobile, Alabama. We moved there in April of 1988. I am the senior partner of a group that covers the ER’s at 2 hospitals in the Mobile area. In addition, I also work for the Mobile Fire Rescue Department as their medical director and with a Federal Disaster Medical Assistance Team, part of FEMA.

Things that we enjoy doing now and over the years since leaving Karlsruhe include college sports (as in Alabama football), hiking and backpacking way up north, sailing, photography, and computers. We look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion, and hopefully even more in the future.

ANOTHER BIO
(dated April 18, 2002)

Greetings All,  I was pharmacy specialist at 3rd General dispensary from October 1969 to November 1970 – until he "escaped" to civilian life. Dennis Stepanik and I were the fastest duo in Germany at crankin’ out scripts. I took a "European Out" intending to travel for awhile, but my red VW bug was shipped from Bremen sooner than I intended, forcing me to return to the states almost immediately – the flavor of my brilliant military career carrying over after ETS!

I deliberately had made no plans for my return to Wisconsin, deciding to keep an open mind about work sites, etc. but sort of fell into a staff pharmacist position at Methodist Hospital in Madison. With the exception of a couple of years in small-town retail pharmacies, spent my entire career there – only resigning in March 2002. A few years ago Methodist "merged" with another, larger hospital in town, read that as "submerged!" – and the last trances of it will disappear in the next year or so – a familiar story in health care these days.

Had some good times skiing, backpacking out West, and partaking of fermented malt beverages in the decade or so after my return, then got mid-life restlessness, spent that time in retail, then returned to UW-Madison and earned a degree in agricultural journalism, intending to sort of split careers. Just after graduating, though, met Patricia, R.N. who headed the hospice unit at Methodist, and we were married in 1986. She went on for her Ph.D. and late last year began work as an assistant professor at the College of Nursing at the University of Utah, specializing in end-of-life care – a dream job for her. My instructions from her are to not work as much and cook – we actually met in a cooking class! I like to – she doesn’t. The way the bureaucracy is moving as I try to transfer my pharmacy license out here it may be years before I have a chance to work anyway. We are still unpacking and will be for some time – and all this stuff will preclude my getting out to Boston, but hope y’all have a great time – if I should come across any pictures I will forward them on.

Still remember that weekend in Amsterdam when Lokay drove some of us up there….. and Lt. Wrongway Peachfuzz.

Rotated in April 1971. Returned to work at same old place (Crankshaft factory). Returned to college and graduated in 1974. Stayed at same old place as I would have to take much less to get started. Continued working at same old place until 1991, when they closed. Have since 1991 worked as Quality Control Manager in foundry. Brigitte and I adopted a son in 1980. He made us grandparents in January 2002. Zachary Sachjen, he’s a real joy. We were blessed with a biological daughter in April 1984. That’s Laura Elisabeth, she’s almost done with high school and will go on to college.

We had a visit from Bill Lokay in 1972. We visited Neil and Susan Woodworth in 1976 and had a visit from Paul Strauser in 1980, just after the adoption. So we have had some contact over the years.

We have gone back to Germany many times over the years. Brigitte and I went together in 1974, 1977, 1979, and 1981. She has gone back many more times with the children over the years. I have been back solo in 1988, 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2001. I have collected German coins since 1971 and have built a circle of contacts around Germany. Through genealogy I found my relatives in East Friesland in the northwest area of Germany and have visited them every time since 1988.

When in Karlsruhe I would go back to the old Smiley Barracks. While there were still troops there it was enjoyable. On one trip there I stumbled onto SP6 Eugene Dugger!! I’ve gone back to visit Annie the Putzfrau on two occasions. She’s still alive. But now Smiley is not, and it is painful to see it and think of the good times we’ve had there.

Departed the military at Fort Dix on June 4th 1970. Returned to Duquesne University and received my BS in Pharmacy. Took a job in State College, Pennsylvania after graduation in 1971 and that is where I met Leslie (my wife). Got married in 1972 and moved to San Antonio, Texas with no jobs but a whole lot of hope. Leslie found a teaching position (she’s a special ed teacher) immediately, I found a staff pharmacist job at Bexar County Hospital three days later. I did a lot of different stuff in SA including owning my own drugstore (a mistake), teaching (loved it), and ended up in hospital administration.

Was offered a job in 1976 with a small company in Houston called Owen. Started as director of operations and training left as Senior Vice President: Chief Human Resources officer and SVP of International Operations. Left Owen in 1997 after a personal dispute and moved to Mico, Texas (population 400). Going from traveling around the world every two to three weeks to living in almost total isolation while we finished our lake house changed my thinking. Stayed retired for two years: finished the house, built a boat dock, built a garage (larger that the house) would still be building except that we determined that the more time I spent building the less money we had. Started working as a healthcare consultant part time in 1999 and still find a project to do every year (brings in money, reduces the amount of money going out).

We have two sons both of whom live in Houston: both of whom are married.

Hobbies: Building stuff, collecting Corvettes (4 currently), traveling, and generally enjoying life and my wife!

ANOTHER BIO
(dated March 15, 2002)

Returned to Philly in 1970 and the company that I had worked for before joining the Army (was a junior draftsman for a conveyor manufacturer called FMC). Some people from Karlsruhe, Bill & Annelise Lokay, Carl Sachjen, Bob & Rose Bergrab, and Rodney Johnson stopped to see me after they were discharged from Ft. Dix, New Jersey before they went home.

Started to date a girl that I knew from high school and we were married in 1971. Was laid off from FMC and worked for a year at St. Lukes Hospital with heroin addicts at an in-patient program. Was hired by a company called Morris Wheeler, an overhead crane manufacturer, as a estimator (quotes project man-hours and material costs) in 1972. Visited with Bob and Rose Bergrab during a trip to Florida that year also. My son Jeremy Paul Strauser was born in 1973 and was able to visit with Neil and Susan Woodworth in North Tonawanda, New York about this time.

Gilbert Allemore and his wife as well as Vince and Beth Inahara (both Gil and Vince had re-enlisted in the Army) visited while they were stationed in the Philly area at different times. Divorced in 1975, not at all my fault, and remarried the same woman (duh?) again in 1976. Separated in 1977 and eventually divorced. Attended night classes at Villanova (was editor of night school newspaper), played in a few chess tournaments, and was able to visit Dennis & Eryn Bradley and Carl & Brigitte Sachjen before leaving Philadelphia area for southern climates.

After seven years with Morris Wheeler, a company called PACECO in Gulfport, MS hired me as an estimator in 1980. Really liked Mississippi with the nice warm weather, Mardi Gras (only 67 miles from New Orleans), seafood, Cajun food, crawfish, and within walking distance to the Gulf of Mexico. Jim Tapee stopped in for visit during this time. Met my wife Gerri, she’s an LVN, and we were married in 1989.

Was with PACECO for ten years. Was then hired by a company from Houston called KRANCO in 1990 as an estimator. Started to work here in Fort Worth at Ace World in 1995 as the Purchasing Agent. All of these companies that I have worked for manufacture overhead cranes and hoists.

My wife and I enjoy driving around Texas looking for ghost towns and local festivals on the weekends. Any other extra time will find me working in our garden.

Needless to say it was quite a surprise to receive your letter. It really jogged a lot of memories of the 3rd General Dispensary. Here is a brief update since leaving Germany.

I had gotten divorced a couple of years after leaving Germany and have been single ever since. I have a 30 year old son named Kristian who was actually born in Germany while at the 3rd General Dispensary.

I have been working for the same company for the past seventeen years, Good Sports, Inc., we distribute tee shirts and leather wear. Anyhow, I’ll fill in all the blanks when hopefully some of us can get together again. Best of luck to all.

Hello everyone. I was pleasantly surprised to receive Paul’s letter. Hope to stay in touch with you. Here is a brief history since the good old days. When I came back I was completely lost, had no direction, drifted for a while. Maxene and I got divorced, completely my fault. We are friends now, she is living in Atlanta, Georgia. Worked for a couple years as a lab tech. Went back to medical school in Rome, Italy. Became a radiologist. While there I met my present wife, Mary O’Connor. She is also a radiologist specialized in mammography. Have three kids, Sean 22, Daniela 16, and Christina 13.
