FOR THE FORMER PERSONNEL OF THE 3RD GENERAL DISPENSARY KARLSRUHE GERMANY (AND ALSO THE 761ST MEDICAL DETACHMENT PERSONNEL AT GERSZEWSKI BARRACKS) http://3rdGeneralDispensary.BraveHost.com/ http://3rdGeneralDispensary.BlogSpot.com/h The ARM PIT hVol. XI – No. 4 "ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS WE PRINT" Feb 22, 2008Now Being Sent To Twenty States ARMPIT2005@juno.com(Click "F11" for the wide screen version)
CHAMPAGNE CAMPAIGN (Special): Is it a runaway? Is it close? Is a location going to pull an upset? I don’t know. But How About This: Maybe at the next reunion we need to have a champagne toast! Know we haven’t had one at any of the reunions. Yeah, we had a few toasts for this and that but let’s try to have a champagne toast and a group photo also! Now Back to the Campaign: You have one week remaining to let me know what city youwhat to have a champagne toast in during our 2009 reunion. Your choices – Branson, Kansas City, New York City area, Santa Barbara, or St. Louis Remember: We will use the same method in selecting our 2009 reunion location as we used for the 2007 reunion location. The winning location will need to have a majority of those voting. If no location has a majority of those voting we will eliminate those locations that had no votes AND also the lowest vote count from consideration and we will vote again. We will keep voting until we do have a location that has a majority. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ REMEMBER THE REUNION! (continued)(San Antonio): Before going out for a walk on the Riverwalk Jim Reed introduced me to retired Sergeant Major Tony Alviar. Made arrangements to meet with Tony Saturday morning at 10 AM in the hotel lobby so he could lead the tour of Fort Sam Houston. I have a special stop in mind to make during the tour and was hoping that Tony will be able to make it happen. (to be continued……………..) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What they are saying…………I was in Karlsruhe from September 1962 to July 1967, assigned first to the 595th Medical Company and later to the 761st Medical Detachment. Captain Don Morton was my CO in both units. Great work Paul. Love to attend one of your reunions. Fernando Martinez, November 6, 2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ STRANGE TALES AND OTHER FACTS ………………………….Happy New Year!Jim & Annie Reed met New Year's Eve, December 31, 1967 in the Turm Cafe on Karlsruhe's Kaiserstrasse. They were married June 3, 1969 and have been together since. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GERSZEWSKI BARRACKS TOUR Whoa! I think we turned the wrong way. Thanks to Phil Leonard for pointing that out. Let’s turn around and go back the other way! Geez, I hope we don’t get lost again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A War by Any Other Name Installment 25 of 28 that tells how it was in Karlsruhe for GI’s during the seventies by Thomas J. Radke Time kept on slippin’ into the future - and after a three week visit by my younger brother and a road trip that will live in infamy,I was soon up against my ETS date – estimated time of separation from military service. Oh boy, oh boy, it couldn’t come any sooner; I’d had my fill and the re-enlistment spiel they gave me was half-hearted. They could see my answer in my eyes. I have made it; 30 months, 2 ½ years, good times and bad times and I was actually walking around with a clipboard in my hand and a smile from ear to ear. Out-processing is a rite of passage from that place. We’d always watched the fortunate depart from morning formation with envious hearts as they went to the various locations on the paperwork, getting the little stamps of A-OK so you couldn’t skip out on an overdue bill at the tailors or with an extra M-16 in your duffel bag. It was usually a smooth process well lubed by frequent stops at the snack bars, Gerszewski and Smiley, nothing to do but ride the duty bus back and forth in a haze. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ YOUR VOTE FOR THE 2009 REUNION LOCATION DUE BY FEBRUARY 29th Email: Armpit2005@juno.com or pstrauser@aceworldcompanies.com or Phone: 817-485-4261 or Mail: 7201 Park Creek Circle East, Ft Worth, TX 76137 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SNEAK – A – PEEK ……………………………from the San Antonio 2007 ReunionJust wait until you see the photos from the Fort Sam Houston tour! It was great! Here are a few photos from the "Burgie" collection to hold you over until we get there. We started the tour at the Quadrangle. It is the oldest part of the fort built in 1876. http://ameddregiment.amedd.army.mil/fshmuse/tour1.htm------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLASSICAL PIT……a reprint from Volume IX - Number 2, dated January 27, 2006 One of our favorite stories ……………………………………from Merv NortonMy wife and I have made two trips to Karlsruhe since we left in 1953. You heard about Hans and Fritz, bartenders, in the Officers Club in 1964. Our next trip was in 1976 and I was then a civilian. On this trip I had a car and drove into Smiley Barracks, took several pictures and was stopped by the German guard as I tried to leave. He took me to the MP office just inside the gate. The MP Sergeant said that he had only been in the country for three weeks and did not know what to do. He called the MP duty officer who said, "If he is a retired Army Officer, he can take all the pictures he desires." I was then released. (AP: Merv is the Secretary of the 1st Signal Brigade Association www.1stSigBde.org ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Under The Arm Pit …………...Mr. & Mrs. Marty Bauer have put their house up forsale in Tempe, Arizona and are planning to move to Nashville, Tennessee so that they can be closer to their grandchildren……………Nashville? That sounds like a great place for a reunion one day too!…………..but first, 2009 - Find out where? (maybe) in the next issue……….did I tell you? Janet Carroll won a trip to Munich, Germany! She and "BC" will be going in late September just in time for the Octoberfest……………... ……………….....That is all. |

GIVING THANKS (Special): Have been wanting to write this article for quite a while and think it is most appropriate at this time of year as we give thanks next week for what we have. We all should give thanks for the time we spent in Karlsruhe. I can honestly say that I can not think of a better bunch of people than all of you. Many of us shared time with others back then and that is the main reason for having these reunions since we enjoyed the company and companionship from then to the present day. We have also made new friends at these reunions with those who served either before or after us. Karlsruhe Has A Special Meaning: For many of us, Karlsruhe holds a special place in our hearts because of what it means to us. Get a load of this will ya - Some Of Us: Had children born while we were stationed in Karlsruhe. I know Connie and Bill Husband had a daughter while stationed there. Joe Aresco had a son born while serving at the 3rd General Dispensary. And the daughter of Dr. Henry Berman was born at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt. While Others: Found their love and married. Carl & Brigitte Sachjen, Bob & Rose Bergrab, Gilbert Allemore and his wife, Art & Lola Jolliff, Vince & Beth Inahara, Ivory & Annie Brown, Bill & Annelise Lokay, and I’m pretty certain of Jay & Mary Pedrin. All In All: All of this is pretty incredible and it has to be special to just hear the word Karlsruhe spoken or see it in writing. Having served there, having children there, or getting married there. Karlsruhe was an important part of our lives, and its impact on each of us shows even now as we continue to meet every other year. How grand! =================== MORE VETERANS INFO (Special – by Dr. Henry Berman): A friend of mine has a job that includes making sure that vets get the benefits they are entitled to. He didn't know about this LTC benefit, and is going to look into it. But he did send me the following info, which may be of interest to your readers: In the late 1890's [that's not a typo] the legislature created the Soldiers & Sailors Relief Fund (now called veterans relief at the state level), which sets aside a small portion of property tax in each county that stays in each county, dedicated to helping indigent veterans. It was administrated by local chapters of national veterans organizations and/through the county auditors office. In 2005, the law changed RCW.73.08 http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/ giving the county legislative entity authority do things, rather than the local vet orgs. Because each county did/does their own thing, each county program varies. See http://www.metrokc.gov/dchs/csd/Veteran/index.htm to find out if vets live in a county that has enhanced the basics. So as veterans, we have Federal www.va.gov; state www.dva.wa.gov, and local county benefits depending the criteria of eligibility. =================== "What’s a matter with you, baby" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAGNIFICENT! (continued) (Chicago): After the Saturday night banquet a small group gathered in the Rendezvous Bar on the fourth floor of the Union League Club of Chicago. It was here that Maxene Raices, Lee McGuire, Dusty Summers, Ken Burrows, and Paul & Gerri Strauser witnessed one of those spontaneous events of epic proportions that becomes a part of the folklore of these reunions. Bill Lokay commenced to entertain those at the table by proceeding to "rap" the entire song of Talking Vietnam Pot-Luck Blues by Tom Paxton. Let’s listen (or sing-a-long)……………. Well when I landed in Vietnam I hardly got to see Saigon They shaped us up and called the roll and off we went on a long patrol Swappin’ lies, swattin’ flies, firing the odd shot here and there Captain called a halt one night and we had chow by the pale moon light A lovely dinner they planned for us with a taste like a seat on the crosstown bus Some of the veterans just left theirs layin’ in the can For the VietCong to find, said it was deadlier than a land mine Well naturally somebody told a joke and a couple of fellows began to smoke I took a whiff as a cloud rolled by and my nose went up like an infield fly Captain, he’s a blonde fellow, went to Yale looked up at me and said "What’s a matter with you, baby" Well I may be crazy but I think not, I swear to God that I smell pot! But who’d have pot in Vietnam? He said, "Whaddaya think you’ve been sittin’ on?" these funny little plants…..thousands of them. Good God Almighty! Pastures of plenty! So we all lit up and by and by the whole platoon was flying high, with a beautiful smile on the Captains face he smelled like midnight on Saint Marks Place Crackin’ jokes, cleaning his weapon, Chanting something about Hari Krishna, Hari Krishna Well the moment came as it comes to all that I had to answer nature’s call I was stumbling around in a beautiful haze when I met a little cat in black PJ’s He had a rifle, BF Goodrich sandals, looked up at me and said "What’s a matter with you, baby" He said we’re camping down the pass and smelled you people blowing grass and since, by the smell, you’re smoking trash brought you a taste of a special stash Straight from Uncle Ho’s victory garden. We call it Hanoi Gold So his squad and my squad settled down passed some lovely stuff around All too soon it was time to go - Captain got on the radio said "Hello Headquarters, Headquarters, We have met the enemy and they have been smashed" © Copyright Tom Paxton
------------------------------- THE READERS (ARE ALWAYS) RIGHT (chatter, chatter) Daniel Baruch – Just received your newsletter. Couldn't find Tom Paxton's song in your email so I went into the deep caverns of my hard disk to listen to it after so many years and I am sending it to you as an attachment in case...to go along with the words you sent.AP – "What’s a matter with you, baby." Will try to send Talking Vietnam Pot-Luck Blues by Tom Paxton that Daniel Gerszewski sent to me with the next issue of the PIT. Bob "Burgie" Burgeson – In case you're wondering when the last time I was in San Antonio, I can tell you it's been 40 years to the month. I can't remember what the date was that I left there but I do know that it was May of 1967. From there I went to Fort Carson, Colorado and then to Germany in January of 1968. I don't remember spending much time off base when I was there then and look at me now, going back to the base for a visit. My, how time changes some things. AP – Will try to list the last time everyone was in San Antonio who attended the reunion. Anonymous – You mentioned a while back that someone who is still in the service, I think stationed in Germany, is a "Psyoper." What exactly is that? Regis Shields – I remember the photo lab in the University of Maryland building. I use to develop my film there as a young teenager in the middle 70’s. AP – Some medics would develop their own film also. Seems as if one would spend their money on something nice for themselves be it a really good 35mm camera, stereo equipment, motorcycle, or a new VW or BMW. The Thrift Store in that building did a lot of business selling stuff to families that moved into the area. Bob Bergrab bought an electric skillet and we would use that to cook most of our meals since we didn't go to the Mess Hall except near the end of the month when we ran out of money. AP – Sorry "Bry", but my fingers sometimes press the wrong keys and it is a complete surprise at times where I go!? Uh, the password by the way is DOD. Original isn’t it! Katie Dowling – Geez, sick call sure was different when I was there from 1991 to 1995. We saw anywhere from 80 to 150 soldiers on sick call and then we took care of the dependents. We even had a pediatrician doc for the babies and we had a Taiwan doc that did pap smears along with the Commander. Needless to say all the females went to Heidelberg for those services. But then again this was when the new clinic was built and we had several ambulances to service the community. Of course we were pulled for all the school sports, Junior ROTC, boxing, football and all that BUT WE HAD FUN! AP – Thanks Katie "for telling it like it is." And now, through the wonders of the internet, ladies and gentlemen – many recent photos of various Karlsruhe military facilities OF WHICH includes the new clinic built for the 3rd General Dispensary in 1991 off of Smiley and absorbed the 761st Medical Detachment at that time. Click on this: http://picasaweb.google.com/regis.shields/SmileyBarracksPRVDispensary01072006 All photos at this site are provided by Regis Shields and the PIT gives him a bigTHANK YOU Connie Husband – Of interest since I don’t know who the fellow is in the picture with the orange and red poster. Can you enlighten me? Strangely, Bill and I had that same poster. Where was your picture taken? AP – Connie, that’s Jim Tapee and I believe in was taken in the barracks. "JT" worked in the Supply Room from August 1969 to February 1971 and that poster could very well be the one you and Bill had while you were in Karlsruhe from October 1968 to October 1969 as many people would give things away before they rotated back to the states. ------------------ TO TELL THE TRUTH (Special): Just in time for Election Day. To tell the truth? Think it will ever happen from politicians? I don’t think so. So for your reading enjoyment today I’ve included this post that I found in September 2006 while doing a Google search for Gerszewski Barracks. It’s On: A web site called www.JessicaLynch.com and the posted remarks are dated July 19, 2006. This post was replying to a post called "Jessica for President." So Sit Back: Relax, and welcome to another TV game show here at the PIT. Today we will play To Tell The Truth and here is our host – Bud Collyer with panelists Tom Poston, Peggy Cass, Orson Bean, Kitty Carlisle, as well as all of you. If any of you know who our contestant is please let me know. Now Let’s Play: TO TELL THE TRUTH as the camera zooms in on a figure standing up on stage, the lights come on, shinning on this person, and he begins to speak– I, Jake H, realize there have been several unofficial women presidents, depending on how you interp the particular situation. Check out Edith Wilson when her hubby got a mystery ailment, Eleanor Roosevelt when her hubby was on his unhealthy way out. Also check out the steel magnolia and her daughter Amy, as they seemed to have more to say then Jimmy who? Certainly Hillary and her temper tantrums got hubby’s attention after his no-no with that cigar chick. I’m almost positive Condoleeza is the real brains in the White House. Every time "Dubya" does an off-the-cuff stunt and Condi isn’t there to keep him from saying the wrong thing at the most inopportune time like his latest zinger, he created a new tribe or something in Lebanon calling them "Hezboolians," if I git his Texan pro-noun-citation rat. I have not had the esteemed honor of meeting Jessica, perhaps, if the good Lord willing allows me that privileged opportunity, I have some interesting anecdotes to share with her about the 507th who had a European control location at Gerszewski Barracks in Knielingen, outside Karlsruhe, Germany. I worked across the street from them when I was NCOIC of the 761st Med Dispensary. Then again I’m talking about a time when she was a future gleam in her parent’s eyes. Since I am new to this forum I have several other topics of a decidedly humor spin to offer but I’m not sure yet as to what is deemed appropriate. I take for granted Jessica being a Lynch a time honored Irish name, also where some Scots folk driven out of Scotland for religious reasons over to Northern Ireland intermarried with the Irish and picked up over time the label Scots-Irish with predominantly Irish names, could also be a member of that oppressed grouping. When I was a kid, say, some 60 plus years ago it was common to hear in NYC folk saying stuff like, "Ya know there’s only two kinds of people on this planet, those who are already Irish and all the rest who wanna be Irish." So if Jessica decides to run for Office there be a whole big bunch of us Irish folk out there to cheer her on. Will the real Jake H. please stand up? (AP: I have no idea who Jake H is. Do any of you have any thoughts on who it could be?) Disclaimer: The above does not reflect the official beliefs, thinking, or political affiliation of The ARM PIT and even if it did I try not to discuss politics, religion, or sex (since when?) in this "toned down" "sanitized" "PC" family version of The ARM PIT. ---------------------------- A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION By now most of you have heard that your names, addresses, social security numbers, sexual preference, and the age you started to walk have been compromised. We also recently sent all of you a letter which basically said it wasn’t our fault but yours since it was YOU who was in the service to begin with and well, heck, we have a lot of names to keep track of so how do you expect us to do that without taking work home. Also I should mention, that unlike what has been reported, ALL names of ALL service personnel from those serving with General George Washington to the year 2050 have been compromised due to our mishandling of just one little Dell laptop. Na-nana-na. No cases of stolen identities have been reported to date but to put your minds at ease, the Veterans Administration has contracted with The ARM PIT to implement a security measure that will solve the entire situation and those details will be revealed in a future issue of the PIT so you will have to keep reading this rag to find out about it. From the Secretary of Veterans Secretary, ------------------------------ THE ARM PIT "TELLS IT LIKE IT IS" ONCE AGAIN The colonel in Heidelberg in charge in 1968, Dr Sieber, was very casual, as, of course, was Lt.Col. Lew Wash, CO of the 3rd General Dispensary. Both of them got out about the same time, and Col Tiffany became the new commander in Heidelberg. Sanders took over from Wash, Momma Cash showed up and Bill Husband left and Montgomery took over. Well, Sanders and Cash were concerned about the lack of respect shown by four of the doctors—Major Berman, Major Cohen, Major Hirsch, and Captain Roma. Col Tiffany told the four doc’s at the 3rd that they had to attend a special meeting on a Saturday morning, with him. He told them that they were causing trouble and had to be more respectful. He would take no questions, but the docs could meet with him individually. Instead of doing that, the SMILEY GANG of FOUR wrote a letter to the higher-up physician, in Landstuhl, telling him about their concerns with the way decisions were being made by Sanders, Montgomery, & Cash. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Hirsch finished and rotated out; Dr. Berman was transferred to Frankfort; Dr. Cohen ended up with an Article 15. As for Dr. Roma, he was due for promotion shortly before he out processed, and that would mean he could ship more pounds of stuff home. Col Tiffany tried to prevent the promotion, but the Colonel's secretary pointed out to him that Capt Roma was in a 100% promotion group (8 years in the military with 3 years of active duty--all docs got credit for years in medical school and training in the way they calculated years), and it wasn't a choice on the part of the Colonel--Roma HAD to be promoted. So Tiffany begrudgingly signed the order. ------------------------- The ARM PIT L INVESTIGATES How to obtain a copy of your DD-214 On September 17, 2004 Harold and Carolyn Graham sent in an email asking for help to get them a copy of Harold’s discharge papers. Harold was trying to get a passport but did not have his birth certificate from the state of Montana which said he was never born? One web site ( www.globemaster.de/faq/records.html ) said it could furnish the discharge papers but the person needed to know his military numbers and Harold did not have them. To obtain a copy of your DD-214, Discharge Papers, log on to this web site of www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/ and follow the directions. You do not need any Army numbers, just your social security numbers, and I tried it and was able to obtain an exact copy of my DD-214 discharge paper that I have kept all these years in a safe place. Be sure to complete the year after "19_ _" and sign and fax the proper request form that is printed out. You can also make your request by mail to: NPRC WEB 9700 Page Avenue St. Louis, MO 63132-5100 ----------------------------- CLASSICAL PIT……a reprint from a non-numbered issue dated November 19, 1969 MAJOR BERMAN WILL GROW MUSTACHE! Yes folks it’s true. ARM PIT reporters finally reached Dr. Berman by telephone late last night and persuaded him to "Tell it like it is" to The ARM PIT. "All that now remains to be decided is when", stated Dr. Berman, who feels it is his patriotic duty to respond to Mama Cash’s latest directive that all military personnel grow mustaches with greatest possible speed (Does this apply to the WACs? Or is Major Cash once again going soft on them!). Dr. Berman is reportedly undecided as to whether he should grow his mustache now or wait until he returns from leave next month and surprise her. "For reasons of security I cannot reveal to you my plan", said Berman, "But I have a secret timetable". ----------------------------- THE OUTER LIMITS? (Special): From The ARM PIT control room – We control the horizontal! We control the horizontal! We control the horizontal! W E C O N T R O L T H E V E R T I C A L W E C O N T R O L T H E V E R T I C A L Hit it Mick………………… You can’t always get what you want. You can’t always get what you want. No, you can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometime, you might find, you get what you need! Oh, yeah! You get what you need! Connections: The PIT has many connections – We can assist those of you who want to attend the reunion. We made it happen before and it can happen again. We can get you to Chicago if you need us to help. We control the horizontal. We control the vertical. NO WAIT! That’s The Outer Limits isn’t it. We can help you "Get What You Need" – discounted air fares, we will try our best to get you to the reunion but you need to let me know so we can make it happen. A place to stay? No problem, we will prop you up at night in the lobby and all you have to do is look like a statue! The Saturday night banquet? No problem, eat off the children’s menu or eat off my plate. – your choice. Friends of the PIT: The "Friends of the PIT" assisted one person to attend the Boston reunion. The "Friends of the PIT" assisted another person to attend the San Francisco reunion. We want everyone who wants to attend to be in Chicago. It can happen. ------------------------- The ARM PIT L INVESTIGATES - THE MAN NAMED SMILEY (Part One) From the www.usarmygermany.com web site Kasernes, Karlsruhe – Histories & Misc. Info: The smallest kaserne in Karlsruhe, Smiley Barracks, is the seat of the Post Headquarters. The barracks owes its name to T/4 Lester W. Smiley, who was posthumously awarded the Silver Star in World War Two. The source listed for this information is the General Orders for Naming Kasernes, USAREUR Military History Office dated 1958. The ARM PIT L INVESTIGATES - THE MAN NAMED SMILEY (Part Two) Found a complete name for whom Smiley Barracks was named after of Lester W. Smiley on the www.usarmygermany.com web site. Next checked the www.wwiimemorial.com registry to see if any other information was available for this man. The National Archives & Records Administration from War Department files says his hometown was in Clark County Wisconsin. A photo of a sign on base taken by Merle Berry which told the story of T/4 Smiley (the sign did not give a first name) and when the barracks was renamed was in a earlier issue of the PIT. This story is also on our "Unit Page" for the 3rd General Dispensary at the www.military.com web site. You should know me well enough by now that I had to do the search process and found 109 Smiley’s in the state of Wisconsin with a listed phone. Do you think I should call and try to locate a relative? ------------------------ CLASSICAL PIT…a reprint from Volume I - Number 9, dated November 26, 1969 Under The Arm Pit…......Reports have it that when we go out on our field exercise that Mama Cash and Randy Brumund will share the same tent! How about it Randy?.........For those of you who missed it, most of the personnel of the 3rd went to training yesterday morning for "Character Guidance" at Neureut Kaserne Theater, ask someone who went to fill you in on the subject (now we really are a bunch of characters)……..A public announcement: In issue number six of The ARM PIT we made a false report about Dr. Berman sending Dave Hewitt up to Heidelberg on a run instead of Gilbert Allemore. Well really fans it was Dr. Roma who made the decision to over rule Mama Cash. We really are sorry Dr. Roma about the mix up……..however, Dr. Roma does receive our Doctor of the Week Award for his actions last week at the 761st when he went above and beyond the call of duty. Dr. Cohen was the previous winner……..a new contest by the editors of The ARM PIT – choose your favorite name: LT. FUZZ or ROGER ROTC, the winning name will be used by the paper…….a full field layout today and we know everything will go shipshape, however we aren’t on ship but land…...stay informed, read the new weekly ARM PIT every Monday morning starting next Monday with various extras when needed………...Be Good!…………….That is all. ----------------------- DAY TRIPPER Who of you were with me when we seen Brad and Eryn walking on the sidewalk in Amsterdam when they went to see the musical Hair? Eryn was wearing her furry boots. Who else went to Amsterdam to see Hair? (is that a loaded question or what?) ----------------------- THE READERS (ARE ALWAYS) RIGHT (chatter, chatter) Frank Jones – I’ll bet Logan was excited to hear from you and receive the PIT. I need to call him soon. He is really a neat guy and very talented. We use to drink lots of beer and play guitar and organ in the barracks. Logan was the only one who could carry a tune though. He was certainly one of the best medics at the 3rd and now is a cardiac PA. AP – Yes, I understand he was Schroeder in the play You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown which was presented at the Stagedoor Playhouse on Smiley Barracks. Rodney Johnson – I’ll be at the next reunion. AP – Great! Do know many who attend really want to see you again Rodney. Bob "BC" Carroll – Loved Chicago; but the special attraction was the camaraderie among us; can you imagine if we were in a combat unit? AP – But "BC", that’s what I tell everyone I know now! Hush. Bill Daniel – Thank you for the messages. I particularly enjoyed the Gerszewski info and pictures. Sure would like to see some of the folks I knew – Neil Woodworth, Tapee, Rodney, etc. AP – That’s what these reunions are all about Bill. I know many who want to see you. Please think about joining us in 2007. I’m sure you will enjoy it. Those who attend do. Joe Aresco – I will do my best to see you next time. AP – Joe, it’s shaping up as the "Mother" of all reunions. Hope you can make it! Anonymous – Why don’t you tell more stories about the Turd? AP – Uh, we really don’t want to mention his name and be responsible for some of you having "Flashbacks" and going bonkers on us, but the PIT will soon reprint the article that was in The Overseas Weekly which was included in "da 3rd book". Terry Donahue – I surfed the www.usarmygermany.com website you included in the latest ARM PIT and found some pics of my old barracks (McNair Barracks) in Berlin. AP – Welcome to our stroll down memory lane. Royal Stargell – Thanks for the article about the 285th MP Co. I left Karlsruhe in February 1964 so the picture on page 12 was taken after I left. Think I recognize a few. AP – Readers: you can search the above web site for this 12 page recollection about the 285th Military Police Company or I can fax or mail copies to you. It is interesting reading. Anonymous - Did you say "da book" from the Boston reunion was worth twenty bucks? AP – Due to the law of supply and demand it really depends if you are buying or selling. It’s twenty bucks if you are buying and a buck twenty if you are selling. Dr. Henry Berman – (remembering the Canadian PX) Certainly do. Great camera department and great butter from Holland at 44 cents a pound. Then you could go to the movie, which was more current than the one in Karlsruhe. AP – Ah, the movies. Click on www.allmovie,com for complete details of any movie you want to know anything about. Anonymous – What do I win in your "Head Shot" photo contest? AP – No cover up here. You win a toupee of course. Bob "BC" Carroll – I am very disappointed. No reunion this year!!! AP – That’s because you still have hair and we don’t!!! Dr. Henry Berman – (in response to remembering the first moon landing) Watched it at the Officer’s Club. About the only thing I ever did there. AP – You don’t remember hearing Mike Dryver when he played at the Officer’s Club? Specialist Mike Knisely somehow got in to listen to Dryver play his smooth rhythm and blues sounds on his electronic keyboard. Of course Snidely doesn’t remember that either since he walked into a tree when he was leaving. Bruce Christman – Hello Vets and Friends of the 79th Engineers. I moved my 79th web site to another web host provider because Freewebsites.com had a virus and they won’t remove it. Here is the new url: http://79thengineers.fateback.com . Don Winship sent twelve new pictures from Gerszewski in the 1950’s with a very clear one of the swastika. AP – Like the many photo’s and stories that you have Bruce. Keep up the great work. Dr. Don Morton – One correction. The ambulance train AND the 56th Medical BN. were both part of the 30th Medical Group (the train was not part of the 56th Med Bn). AP – Correction noted. Your photo of the Swastika is on Bruce’s web site. Bill Daniel –(in response to how he was after the hurricane) I’m doing fine as frogs hair. AP – And that my friends is exactly what the toupee is made from. ------------------------ WILD, WACKY, WORLD WIDE WEB SEARCH SUSPECT : MICHAEL DRYVERThis is a good one. How many of you remember Michael? He was the Optometrist Assistant from 1968 to 1969. He was darn good on the electronic keyboard and played at the Officers Club from time to time. Searching his name on the web shows that you can order his gospel music on line at www.ntimemusic.com/newissues.htm as well as sheet music, videos, and songbooks. You can also see a fairly recent photo of Michael Dryver at www.standrewsomaha.net/church_staff.htm as he is the Director of Music Ministries. -------------------------- CLASSICAL PIT…a reprint from Volume I - Number 9, dated November 26, 1969 PRE-IG INSPECTION A FLOP! No One Passes? As you all remember, last Friday we had a Pre-IG inspection by none other that Roger ROTC or LT. FUZZ (whichever you like best). Now Roger is a man of no equal. He knows what is happening in the Army but he doesn’t know what is going through our brains, which is when we rotate, number of days left, and the Army is sure one hell of a way to waste two or three years of our lives. Everyone tried his best but no one passed. Which isn’t to startling since we only use our field gear once a year anyway, and that’s only for stupid inspections. Many people were gigged for various different items, which would take a book to describe. However we must mention the fact that Mike Dryver came up with the best lay out (Ha-Ha) and those tires in the junk room co-owned by Strauser, Hewitt, Johnson, and the supposedly evicted Devincenzi were hauled away by Serrano under orders from SFC "You Can’t Do That" Martin. ------------------- An ARM PIT interview – dated November 18, 1969: Specialist Johnson Denies Charges of "Unprofessionalism" "I have tried every detergent and scouring agent", confided Specialist Johnson to an ARM PIT reporter in an exclusive interview yesterday, "and I am unable to remove that stubborn stain from the sink in Dr. Berman’s office. As to Major Cash’s accusation that my attitude toward cleaning the dispensary at night is unprofessional, that is a downright lie. All my life I have dreamed of becoming a putzfrau", said Johnson, "In fact, I even volunteered for an extra year in the Army, providing they gave me OJT as a putzfrau, so that I could have a head start in my chosen career upon reentering the world". According to official sources at Fort Sam, Johnson had all the makings of a great putzfrau, but failed the physical. -------------------------- CLASSICAL PIT…a reprint from Volume III - Number 2, dated October 5, 1970 Lost and Found Lost----One Dispensary of the Quarter award. (The ARM PIT: When "Brad" rotated in May 1970 he made about a zillion copies of his orders to ETS and left them in every nook and cranny at the 3rd General Dispensary.) ------------------ CLASSICAL PIT...a reprint from Volume I - Number 9, dated November 26, 1969 The Smiley Stock Market Report Nov. 24 Nov. 25 Change Ambulance………………….. 6 ½ 3 ¼ Down 3 ¼ Barracks……………………. 17 ¼ 18 ½ Up 1 ¼ CQ Duties…………………… 13 ¼ 14 Up ¾ Distribution Runs………… 23 ½ 16 ¼ Down 7 ¼ Mess Hall Food……………… 6 6 ¼ Up ¼ Patient Care………………… 15 15 No Change Raking Leaves……………… 57 55 Down 2 Snack Bar……………………118 130 Up 12 The Snack Bar reported the biggest gain showing an increase of 12 due to the fact of increase popularity lately and that no Distribution Runs were made yesterday. Also on the up tick were Barracks + 1 ¼, CQ Duties + ¾, and Mess Hall Food + ¼. Barracks made a slight increase because of the newly installed Pool Table, CQ Duties up mainly because he woke almost everyone up for the alert yesterday, and Mess Hall Food up ¼ because nobody got the GI’s yesterday. However looking at the downward swing, Ambulances dropped 3 ¼ due to the fact that yesterday we only had about two running at one time, this caused Distribution Runs to drop a record breaking 7 ¼ since there were none yesterday. Raking Leaves showed a drop for the first time in two weeks and Patient Care stayed the same as always. ------------------------ CLIFFHANGER REVEALED (Special): Had received a very impressive presentation concerning Adolph Gerszewski from Daniel Gerszewski on December 22, 2003. Turned around and sent it to all of you as SOMETHING EXTRA 14 on December 23. This presentation is just part of the web site that Bruce Christman has put together for the 79th Engineer Battalion which was stationed at Gerszewski Barracks. A few photos of Gerszewski Barracks were included at the end of this presentation, which were sent to Bruce by a Corey Becker. Sharp Eye: Dr. Donald Morton has a sharp eye. He had noticed that John Hoffman, who is Adolph Gerszewski’s second cousin, had mentioned Rhine Kaserne as being the previous name for Gerszewski Barracks. As you can see in the photo that Dr. Morton sent to me on December 29, 2003 it was definitely called Rhein Kaserne. He went on to say that the photo was taken on the backside of one of the buildings occupied at the time by the 56th Medical Battalion, which the 761st was a part of. The building was the one (if standing at the front gate) in the back left hand corner of the kaserne and that you had to go behind the building which was up against the fence in order to see it. This picture was taken in 1963 while Dr. Morton was the Commanding Officer at the 761st. From the PIT: Having searched the classmates.com web site for Gerszewski Barracks previously, believe the 56th Medical Battalion departed Gerszewski Barracks during 1965 or 1966 and the 70th Engineers Battalion moved into those barracks at some point in time. Pass It On: I passed this photo on to both Walter Elkins (see attached story on page two SOMEONE CONTACTS ME III) and Bruce Christman so that they could use it on their web sites, should they so desire, explaining who took the photo, a brief description on Dr. Morton, and the photo description that Dr. Morton had sent. See what Bruce was able to do http://79thengineers.freewebsites.com/gerszewski_swastika.html with the photo. Any Other Photos?: Notified Dr. Morton that I had passed his photo on to those mentioned above. It amazes me that a whole bunch of folks (like me) are on the web searching for photos of Army installations that they served at. Asked Dr. Morton if he had any other photo’s of buildings, equipment, etc. with or without people and if he did if he could please pass them on to me to use here in the PIT and let others have for their web sites. He has a few more. This also goes for all of you out there. If any of you have any photos that you can scan and email to me. You could also copy them to either a floppy or a CD and mail them to me. Your efforts would be greatly appreciated by many. Exciting Conclusion: Now if you remember, Dr. Morton retired as Director of Medical Imaging from St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady, New York. Bruce Christman acknowledged receipt of my email to him. He said that he would have to drop Dr. Morton a email also because (and here is where our STRANGE TALES AND OTHER FACTS story comes into focus) "When he took that picture in 1963 I was living two blocks from St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady." But wait, there is even more! Strange Tales and Other Facts: Bruce Christman told Dr. Morton that his parents later owned Christman Nursery in Niskayuna, New York and asked Dr. Morton if he ever bought a Christmas tree from them. Dr. Morton replied that not only did he buy Christmas trees from the Christman Nursery but mentioned Bruce Christman’s father by name – Don and that he use to drive by their house every day on the way to work at St. Clares Hospital. Dr. Morton also mentioned that the 79th Engineer Battalion was at a small kaserne just off the "Ring Strasse" when he was in Karlsruhe and that he still is in contact with their Medical Officer Alan Minster. What I’m wondering now is what was the name of that "small kaserne" off the Ring Strasse?" Anyone? -------------------- NUDE WITH VIOLIN Now that I have your attention, Al St.Jacques in Florida is working in a couple of plays. The one he worked on during November 2003 was One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest which Al was doing the makeup. The next play that he is involved in is Nude With Violin and all I can tell you is that Al got the main part and it wasn’t the violin! OK, Nude With Violin is a play about a painter who was credited to have painted great works of art but had others paint them instead except that he took credit for them. It’s a comedy/drama that should be in production now and we wish Al the best of luck. -------------------- AS YOU CAN TELL (Special): You should be able to tell by now that I’m not a shy or bashful person. By placing the ad in The American Legion Magazine (see da book – da sequel) was hoping to contact more of our friends. Also knew that others who served with the 3rd General Dispensary and the 761st Medical Detachment may respond and had thought it would be great to expand the reunion to those who were stationed at either of these two dispensaries in Karlsruhe, Germany at any time. Two Who Did: Both Al St.Jacques and Phil Leonard sent emails (see da book – da sequel) asking about the reunion. Many of you met Al at the San Francisco reunion and Phil had said he would like to contact a Dr. Donald Morton in one of his emails to me. Like Magic: In early March of 2003 I did my magic (hocus, pocus, address and phone number come into focus) and found a phone number for Dr. Donald Morton by searching the AMA directory on the internet (see da book – da sequel). Gave Phil that number and he contacted his former Commanding Officer at the 761st Medical Detachment. Phil then gave me Dr. Morton’s email and I sent him the Timeline, Search List, and The ARM PIT. May Attend In Future: Received an email April 10th (see da book – da sequel) from Dr. Morton who was the CO at the 761st from May 1963 to June 1966. He retired four years ago as Director of Medical Imaging from St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady, New York. Dr. Morton was unable to attend the San Francisco reunion but he may attend a reunion with us in the future. -------------------- WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG? If I heard it once I heard it twice, "Why did it take so long to do this?" Well guess we all had our own lives to live, having kids, watching them grow up and go to school as we worked at what we were doing. Even though some of us had tried to contact some of us, it was not easy to do since you needed the exact city to locate anyone through directory assistance with the phone company. No Computer Expert: Carl Sachjen had been after me for years to get a computer and email so we could keep in touch that way. The company I work for finally hooked me up to the internet last year and gave me email. Now, I’m certainly no computer expert so during the lunch hour I would try searching on the net and see how it works. Had Kept In Touch: I had kept in touch with some of the guys but lost track of most of them and could not find them again due to all the area codes being changed and people moving from place to place. Found this search engine that would spit out addresses and phone numbers if you entered a name and state. Searched for Neil C. Woodworth in New York state and found a phone number, called, and it was him. -------------------- "WE SHOULD HAVE A REUNION" Having contacted Neil Woodworth in Balwinsville, NY, just outside Syracuse, we spoke about the people we knew. Neil said that he and Susan had kept in touch with Bill Daniel in Georgia and that Don Flagg had died in 1995. Paul told Neil that he had kept in touch with Carl Sachjen, Jim Tapee, and Jimmie Tyler. Let’s Hear It Again One More Time: Neil had said that some of the guys where he works who were in the military during the Viet Nam era had gotten together and had a reunion. Neil then said to Paul "We should have a reunion". Was Searching Anyway: Since Paul was playing around with the computer during his lunch hour and was just beginning to search for friends from the dispensary anyway he said "I’ll see what I can do". All of this has been told before, including the very dramatic one act play called "PHONE CONVERSATION". So now we had the beginning of the reunion, even if just Neil and Paul were the only ones who would attend. First Search Engine: The first search engine used was www.bigfoot.com and was used to located and contact Dennis & Eryn Bradley and Bob & Rose Bergrab rather quickly. They were interested in attending a reunion, and it was falling into place really well. -------------------- DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY Searching for people at first was easy. Located and called Terry Charter in Minnesota. He was a medic at the 761st. He is not interested in attending a reunion. Then called a Michael Yount in Peoria, Illinois. He was the food inspector at the dispensary. Well the person who answered the phone was a Michael Yount and when I explained the reason for the call he said "That was my father" and that his father had passed away. Well I was so shocked I really didn’t know what to say. Neil Woodworth had said that Don Flagg had died, but it never really occurred to me that some of our friends would be deceased. Made A Few More Phone Calls: Called a Marvin Black (a medic) in Philly, a Richard Beckwith (X-ray tech) in Maryland, and a Darrell Manning (X-ray tech) in Novato, California. None of them are the people we know, they just had the same name. Also called a Inahara in Fresno, California and he is Vince’s uncle but does not know how to get in touch with Vince, who was a medic. To Start A Mass Mailing: Now searching for people was not so easy. The first names could not be found, many people with the same last name in that particular state, etc., etc. It was decided to start a mass mailing for individuals and see if any results came back that would provide a contact with our friends from the dispensary. -------------------- MORE BAD NEWS From the mailings made last summer, more bad news arrived. Received a fax (see the book for fax and photos) that said Bill Sugg, a company clerk in the Orderly Room at the 3rd, died in 1995. Received a very touching letter (also in the book with photo behind the letter) from Hattie Allemore that her youngest son Gilbert , a medic who worked in the shot clinic, had passed away in 2001 a few months after his wife had died. Gil met his wife while stationed at the 3rd General Dispensary as she was a dependant at the time. I can not remember her name but she had a sister named Mary. First Phone Call: Then I received a call from a Cecil Pedrin in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan. He tells me that he is Jay Pedrin’s son and that Jay, a medic at the 3rd, died in an automobile accident in 1972. Cecil said he was only two years old when his father died and that Cecil’s brother was not even born. Cecil went on to say that his mother passed away during his teens and that he was working in law enforcement. As we spoke, he mentioned that he did not have any photo’s of his dad. Was able to copy the few that I had and send them to him. I remember that Dennis Waterman, an ambulance driver, and Jimmie "Diesel" Tyler, supply room, were really good friends with Jay Pedrin. There is a photo in da book of Jimmie, Jay, and Paul Strauser smoking cigars. Also remember that Jay was really the first one who mentioned having a reunion while we were drinking beer in the bowling alley on Smiley Barracks. Does anyone remember that? You can contact Cecil with any stories you may have of Jay Pedrin at cecil@sault.com. Second Phone Call: Another call came from New York state. A woman whose husband is a cousin of Doug "Shorty" Van Anden called. "Shorty" worked in the Supply Room. She said Doug died in 1980 of a heart attack. Shorty and I went through A.I.T. together at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and arrived at the 3rd General Dispensary at the same time in March 1968. Three pictures of Shorty are in da book. He’s in front of a refrigerator on one page. Two photos are on the same page, one shows him mock fighting with Ramirez (an ambulance driver) and the other he’s holding a phone. |
I was in Karlsruhe from September 1962 to July 1967, assigned first to the 595th Medical Company and later to the 761st Medical Detachment. Captain Don Morton was my CO in both units. Great work Paul. Love to attend one of your reunions. Fernando Martinez, November 6, 2007 Thanks again for The ARM PIT. Don’t know about Germany because my daughter became a doctor this year and she is planning to "walk" for her diploma at Notre Dame on May 17th so I don’t know yet of all the final plans. Boy, that’s as much typing I have done on the computer in a decade. I don't know if I mentioned to you that when I was back there in 1975, 5 years after I transferred to Frankfurt. Murray Cohen (who some of you may remember got an Article XV, pretty rare for an MD/Major--more of the Lee Sanders stuff) and I were traveling together in central and eastern France for a couple of weeks and decided to cross the border and stop off in Karlsruhe. We walked up to the front door of the 3rd General Dispensary, and introduced ourselves. The Spec 5 there said "yeah, I heard something about a bunch of doctors from those days" and we spent a few minutes looking around for old times' sake. Judith and I would love to attend the reunion but we are short on finances for such a trip. Still putting four of our seven children through school. One is studying for her Masters and my other in college just received her Bachelors, etc. But keep us posted, no one knows what the future holds in store. What can I say but, "WOW!" I was the Special Guest? Honestly, I had no idear...... I thought I was there for my annual blood tests, short arms inspection, prostate check and eye exam to renew my operators license for the M2 Multi-Fuel, Field Operation, 56,000 BTU, Cooking, Boiling, Braising & Frying Stove/Burner, Portable. To my extreme surprise, I am awarded an Olive Drab 2007 Reunion T-shirt, a signed certificate making me an Honorary Member of the US Army Medical Department Regiment, someone bought me a drink, I was given a Blast from the Past CD AND the gift of a jar of Kinky Freeman Salsa. Does LIFE get any better? And Paul kept his word that I didn't have to do any blood tests, empty bed pans, ride in the back of an ambulance or administer Lutheran Last Rites to anyone. What a guy! Seriously, you folks make me feel welcome and like one of the pack. I was really honored to be a part of the event and wished I had been able to see it through to the end. Sheesh, I went to Men's Wearhouse and bought a new tie just to wear at the dinner and never got to wear it. And thanks a heap for thinking of my Mom. She is missed, but at 88 and in frail health, she moved on to greener pastures. Paul, several items for you: I need your address so I can send the book Adventures of a 19th Century Medic to you. Also, I am in several Rheinland Kaserne Yahoo Groups like your Smiley Group (but not near as active as you and yours) and several folks are discussing reunions in Karlsruhe. If it's ok with you, I will post info and encouragement about a Karlsruhe reunion at both sites. You indicated recently that you were in favor? The Frau and I are going to Germany next year either in May or September for about three weeks and will be staying with relatives just across the Rhein River north of Karlsruhe in Woerth. I've been in contact with a German fellow who was born and raised and still lives right outside the gates of Rheinland Kaserne in Ettlingen. He, and several other folks in Ettlingen, one a writer and historian, have sent me historical info that the wife and I translated to English. I would really like to get a web site set up and do the same thing for Rheinland and the Engineer units that you have been so successful at with Smiley. Just like Smiley, there is about 50% of the old Rheinland Kaserne left, some very beautiful buildings with over 100 years of history. And, like Smiley, many thousands of American Servicemen and women served there from '45 to the mid '90's. My friend Paul Forrest who was with the 502nd in Neureut '70 or so, wants me to ask you if you remember a Lt. Trimmer, Optician type who was somewhat of a long distance runner jock. Paul was then and is still today at age 60 a marathon runner. Seems that Lt. Trimmer was head of a group of runner types who competed in an all Army meet in Munich one year. I gotta tell you about the Reunion T-shirt you gave me. I LOVE it! Was wearing it one Saturday while puttering around the garage, jumped in the car to do several errands and noticed that the logo and red on the front was attracting attention of other shoppers in Walgreen's. All of a sudden YIKES, I realized that the back of the shirt is even more attractive, a HUGE winged staff and serpent, more red and .. and... and... Damn, what if someone has a stroke, hangnail, heart attack or seizure while I am roaming around Wal-Mart or is choking on fries at Whataburger? Keeeripes, people will look at me, think I am a former MEDIC and expect me to .....call 911? Keep up the good work. I do enjoy the newsletters. It wasn't until this evening I had a chance to watch your masterpiece (THE REUNION THE MOVIE)! I'm glad I requested a copy, a lot of fun. Great piece (as furnished with SOMETHING EXTRA #106 – The Welcome Home ABC News video). Thanks Connie for this. Great photos (from Iraq with SOMETHING EXTRA #105 sent in by Dr. John McMahon). Thanks. I was a RN in the 80’s and went to basic at San Antonio 35 years ago. Where does the time go? Thanks for the wonderful job you do with The ARM PIT!!! Thanks for the great Armpit, as always (and I mean ALWAYS). Shalom Paul . Great! Always enjoy your emails.Baruch Gerszewski, July 20, 2007 When is the next reunion? I would like to tell you that you did a great job getting the reunion together. It was a real pleasure seeing the guys after all these years. I look forward to the next one. We both liked San Antonio a lot and enjoyed seeing everyone again. Thanks again for all you do to make these gatherings possible. Bob "Burgie" Burgeson, June 3, 2007 Congratulations on another great success. I would enjoy the DVD of the event. Thanks again for a great reunion; San Antonio was a great site for this event and to be able to visit Fort Sam Houston was special. Susan and I enjoyed visiting with all of the attendees - those we knew and those we met for the first time. You have made these reunions a celebration and we look forward to the next one!!!Neil Woodworth, May 28, 2007 Paul, I want to say that I really enjoyed meeting you, your wife and all the wonderful folks who attended the reunion. I would have loved to be there for the dinner Saturday night. You and everyone else made me feel right at home and, even though I am not a medic and didn't serve with your units, as one of the medical family. Tony shared with me the group’s visit to Ft. Sam Houston and how everyone enjoyed the museum visit and lunch at the mess hall. I was not aware that Tony had arranged for the group to dine at the mess hall. You can only imagine how much I would have enjoyed that! I must add that I have the utmost admiration for all of the dedication and work you have put into making the reunions such a success over the years. And, it was a true honor to be a part of your reunion and an honorary medic! My certificate will get framed eventually and hung on my office wall. When I get my film developed I will have some photos of the reunion to share with you - they will be scanned and on the way in the next few weeks. Again, thanks so much for inviting me to the reunion - a time that I thoroughly enjoyed.Jim Reed, May 27, 2007 Where is the next reunion? Say hi to FSM for me and the rest of the docs. Hope everyone enjoys the Texas reunion. Please tell everyone hello and we hope to see them at the next 3rd General get together. Sorry to hear that several that we were hoping to see will not be there. We had been planning on coming, but life has thrown us a curve and we are now going to have Brad's mother with us and we are unable to leave her. She is 95 and very close to totally blind. We are very disappointed to have to say we are not going to be there for all the fun. Sorry, but I’m not going to be in San Antonio for health reasons. I give you my heartfelt wishes for an excellent time in SA with our pals. Send me details. I’ll take a look to see if it’s feasible for us. Looking forward to seeing everybody again, plus the new faces. I’m looking forward to seeing all those old people. We’re looking forward to seeing all that will be attending. We are so looking forward to seeing everyone. Looking forward to seeing everyone. Please keep sending the PIT. Nothing to do with Fort Sam, but I have been to San Antonio twice since Doctors' Basic Training in the summer of 1968. In February of 1979, we had a conference of medical directors of health plans there, gave me a chance to see how the River Walk had developed, got back to La Louisiane, which was the best restaurant in town in 1968 and was still wonderful. The day the meeting ended, New York City was hit with two feet of snow, and I couldn't get back for 2-3 days. It brought back memories of finishing up my basic training, and having to wait two weeks in SA until I got my port call. Then in 1988 or so I was a speaker at an AMA educational program in SA. I was on Delta, and the flight from SLC to Spokane was running very late. That was the plane I needed to get to SLC, and from there to SA, and I was going to miss the connection in SLC. So Delta put me on United to SF, and from there on a Southwest flight to SA, via Phoenix. There were delays in Phoenix, and I got in at midnight for my morning presentation. In the hotel lobby (the Marriott, I believe), I was suddenly the shortest person near the elevators. That had happened to me once before, in 1967, in a hotel lobby in Boston, where I realized I was surrounded by NBA basketball players. Same thing this time--I ended up in the elevator with Kurt Rambis, and had a very nice conversation with him. He was a cult figure by then, and there had been an SI feature about him, illustrated by a photo of Lakers fans wearing geeky glasses. I was stationed at the 3rd General Dispensary from 1988 to 1991, as a General Medical Officer. Other docs at the time included C.O. Tom Lyngholm, Joe Pafumy, Steve Kabel, and local national Dr. Tansuat. Had a great time. I served as C.O. of 761st Medical Detachment at Gerszewski Barracks for a short time. Went back to visit in 2001 and was shocked at all the changes. Enjoyed golfing at the Army course in Hockenheim. Sgt. Tom Mathis was the NCO. We look forward to seeing all of those listed and maybe a few more sharing some good times, new and old, with everyone. You’ve done an amazing job of holding the hotel costs down. Mike found the place in San Francisco and we got lucky with the club in Chicago. I think $134 is worth the money – the entire point of being in San Antonio is to be on the River Walk. Is there a plan "C"?? "The Barracks Preacher" Hunter Brown’s name came into my head last night, for who knows why, and now I can’t seem to get it out. Did you ever search for him?Bob "Burgie" Burgeson, October 19, 2006 San Antonio, Yee-ha, sounds good to me. Been a long time and yes it does get hot there. April or May sounds good - but whatever. Lets just get it figured out so we can get our reservations made! Tying to talk Bob Laverick and Dawn Mulford into going, maybe able to get Pati Hoch as well - we'll just have to see. The head of the 130th when I was there was Col. Hal Jennings he was a great leader in fact he became the Army Surgeon General before he retired . Three Stars I think. He was a plastic surgeon and even though he was CO still found the time to operate one day a week. He did reconstructive surgery and I remember sending him a young soldier with a partial facial deformity that he fixed. The change in that soldier was tremendous from a somewhat withdrawn kid to a confident outgoing young man. The head of the Dental Detachment was also an outstanding leader [I can't remember his name right now but he wrote the Textbook of Dental Pathology so is very well known]. He became a one star general--the head of the Army Dental Corps. You may say "That is all" mimicking M*A*S*H, but it is never ALL there is. Yes, I have some photos of Karlsruhe and as soon as I can get the new scanner set up, dig them out and scan them in I will send you some. Ah, another great edition of the PIT. Thanks, makes my whole day, reading these things in the morning. Looking for the next reunion. Enjoyed Chicago. Those Army years were good training for me because when I left in 1966 I did a residency in radiology and practiced for thirty years as a radiologist. I am now retired and do "hands on" patient care at a clinic for people that do not have medical insurance. I only volunteer one afternoon each week but yesterday afternoon we saw about 76 patients (five doctors). I see the "easy stuff" fortunately I work with a few internists who see the diabetics and complicated patients; but, there are a lot of school and work physicals, sore throats, and a few cases of "clap" etc. that I am comfortable with. The story about the doctors at the 761st was interesting. Times must have changed quite a bit. When I was there (from 1963 to 1966) I was the only MD. Saw all of the sick call patients that varied from 50-60 on Monday to 3 or 4 on Friday. Usually the patients on Friday were really sick and many of the Monday patients weren’t very sick. We also did 20-30 physicals two afternoons a week and a hand full two afternoons each week, the remaining afternoon I did the OB clinic at Smiley. The afternoons that we scheduled 20-30 physicals they were done assembly-line (lined up checking everyone’s ears, throat, chest etc.) with me looking and listening, the lab tech writing down what tests needed to be done, the Detachment clerk recording the results etc. It was no problem to do a large number of physicals that way. Most of them were separation physicals. On the other two afternoons we did the officer, NCO, annual physicals and the "re-up" physicals. All in all we ran a pretty efficient organization with a minimum of medics. It must have changed a lot in later years and I would like to hear more of what happened. Keep up the good work. We really enjoy The ARM PIT and the news that comes with it. Keep up the good work! I was browsing the 2003 Reunion materials today. What a kick!! Thonda Stevens was a squad leader while I was stationed at the third and was a real mentor to me as far as working hard to get promoted – I looked her up and found that she is in Columbus, Georgia – Going to try and contact her – She might also be able to help locate some others. As usual I am impressed with your efforts toward the reunion and locating all the long lost souls. I hope I can give a clue as to the person in the photo with Annie and me. Believe his first name is Steve and he was a medic with one of the engineer units but bunked with us. Not much to go on but with your Sherlocking skill it might be enough. I think it’s so neat that you have re-kindled relationships with so many people and have helped guys find guys. What a wonderful thing to do. You can’t be thanked enough. Another fine production of The ARM PIT. Keep up the great work. I truly enjoy reading your continuing issues of The ARM PIT. The old photos of Karlsruhe are really nice to see, some of them are of areas I never got a chance to see while I was there. Thanks for the continuing news and stories. I agree that Chicago was a great success. Plenty to do and a great town. Thanks for all the help and information. I’m going to check out all the links you sent me. I’ve already marked my calendar for 2007. Lee and I enjoyed our stay in Chicago. Still enjoying the newsletter. Keep up the good work. I really appreciate all of your hard work organizing the reunions and especially the PIT. It’s very interesting reading and brings back a lot of memories. Sounds like a great time was had by all. I look forward to the next one in two years. Glad you enjoyed the story. I’ll muse over some others to send in and "submit to da PIT". Just a quick note to thank you for continuing to send me The ARM PIT. I always enjoy the photos and stories. The postings of the Gerszewski yahoo site ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gerszewski_barracks ) have picked up considerably lately. Jack and I loved the opportunity to be in Chicago, loved the Union League Club, and truly enjoyed seeing everybody. Great trip!!! All of this would not have happened without your efforts. We both thank you for your dedication to continue getting this group together at fun places and organizing fun times. Thanks again and when is the next one? Thanks for everything you’ve done for everyone. Thank you once again for a great reunion. We left late Sunday morning and played the latest CD several times as we drove to Milwaukee. You did such a great job of organizing this event and the hotel was excellent…….....great location, great food, and great to see the people. Can’t make it to Chicago this year. Couldn’t escape from work. I received your latest. It was pretty entertaining as usual. All the people in the photos seem a little on the "senior" side of life. Is that where we all are? It doesn’t seem possible (except when I look into the mirror). Randy Brumund, April 23, 2005 Another great ARM PIT. I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoy getting these and hearing about the searches and the stories, etc. The pictures are great also, although some are hard to recognize after all this time. Wow. You’ve really grown this event! I heard about it last year from Romolo and Mike Knisely. I may be able to come and just wondered what else is planned. It’s been such a long time I’d probably need name tags to recall everyone! Got the past ARMPIT issues? I’d be interested in reading them. I can’t imagine what stories you’ve been telling! It would be a real treat to see Dr. Berman, Mike Knisely, you, etc. Each time I review your new email messages I have the Boston CDs playing. "TWICE" is now playing…Rodney on guitar, Jim on drums, Bob singing, and you recording. Great stuff! Received The ARM PIT. It was entertaining. When I was looking at the photos of the Overstreets, I was reminded of the time that we were able to get together in Dallas. When you showed up in the lobby the first time, it seemed as though I was stepping back in time into one of those Rod Sterling movies. I’m looking forward to Chicago and I hope a lot others show up. Thank you so much for sending copies of The ARM PIT. I really enjoy reading and sharing it with fellow colleagues at the hospital. One day when I retire, if my memory holds up, I would like to write a book on some of my experiences in Germany. You are the perfect person to keep our memories alive and a part of our lives (you are our company clerk for life). I believe you have revitalized so many of us with the steady flow of communications and the ever expanding network of former GIs who have, at one point in their lives, served in Karlsruhe. I can’t say I know any of the people in the pictures, but BIAs (Brothers in Arms) always have a good time. I visit VFWs and American Legion Posts every place I go and have some great times. Something about having served makes most of us very proud. I remember those wintry days at Smiley in 1954 and 1955, especially when I walked to town, a bitingly cold New Years, carried a bottle of cognac, made a few friends if only for the moment, a street vendor, a hot chestnut vendor, an old man, or others shared their bottle to name a few. Also miss the mulled wine bought from some sidewalk cafes outdoor booths, the hot wine warmed me like a candle, and the aromas of bratwurst and cabbage being browned on a grill. Most people seemed warm and friendly. Ahhhhhhhh, yesterdays. I’m really looking forward to the reunion. I know about where the place is but I am not familiar with it. Just got done talking to my daughter, who went to school in Chicago, and she said the ULC is a very nice place. It sounded as if this place is really upscale so $100 a night sounds like a real deal. I am planning on attending. I’m looking forward to meeting you and seeing familiar faces from the past. Travis Easter, November 8, 2004 Please include me in your e-mail newsletter. I will try to contact other members of our group and pass the information along to you. I know Travis, he was a good friend of mine. I parted with a pretty expensive bicycle I gave to him as a going away gift. Paul! Am here in Karlsruhe with Brigitte. STOP At internet café. Any pics that I need to get, will be glad to do. STOP Hey, wait a minute this isn’t a telegram! STOP I remember a dentist named MacTavish – I believe he had become a Mormon – had a number of children – was a bit of a strong personality – also remember a nice guy in the dental clinic who was a dental tech – can’t for the life of me remember his name but he had a degree from Creighton University in Omaha – his father was a dentist. Over and out. I did notice a few more names on your rosters last time I looked. Travis Easter and Kim Huckabee were familiar names. Thanks again for all you’re doing for all of us Karlsruhe medical folks! After giving this much thought, and staying up all night, trying to sort out all the options. I have to vote for PEORIA. NO, NO, NO!!!! My mistake, really Chicago in October would be my pick. I’m really looking forward to Chicago in a year. I still enjoy getting all the emails about what is going on with everyone. I hope we can get all the guys to attend the next reunion and see some that did not make it to the last one. Thanks for your efforts! Have downloaded the roster and will respond by email if I come up with any other info. Thanks for the newsletter. Do you have any recent pics of Smiley Barracks? I heard they closed it down in the late 90’s. I was there from 91-94. The dispensary was a newer building that backed up to the airfield behind the PX. Basically the 3rd General and the 761st were both combined to the new clinic. I was an ER medic and on the ambulance team and have been out for nine years. The old 3rd General! Out of the past the memories flood! Yes, I remember Will Archer but can’t remember where he was from. I believe it was in the northeast. I sent Frank Sciannameo an email today. See you next year in Chicago. This (Folds of the Flag sent May 28, 2004 as SOMETHING EXTRA 22) was pretty informative. I think that I will have to print it and put it where I can read it from time to time. I read your newsletters faithfully and enjoy reading and seeing the news of the 3rd and 761st. Keep digging up the boys of the old Third. As I think of it, we had a crusty female nurse (Captain) but I can’t route out her name. There was also a buxom German nurse named Elizabeth as well. Perhaps someone will remember them too. Keep up the great work on the PIT. I really enjoy it and I’m sure everybody feels the same. Doris and I would like very much to go to the next reunion. We wanted to make the last one but couldn’t. But we are planning on this one. Keep the ARM PIT aired out and coming. I look forward to each issue. Kenny Grant, March 13, 2004 A great satisfaction when I read your bullets. Was thinking if the Iraqi mess was twenty years ago I’d be called up. Please keep me apprised of the dispensary news. Phyllis "Phyl" Rose, February 9, 2004 Thanks for the most recent issue of The ARM PIT. I always look forward to receiving them. This one seemed a little extra special with the finding of a couple more friends and the moving story from Randy Brumund, whom I don’t even know but now feel like we share a lot in common. You continue to amaze me. Thank you for your efforts in finding all of this info and photos. You should have been a detective. You really are a detective! One of your notes lists a Cisco. We had a Bob Cisco as a Pharmacist. I believe he was there when I arrived in October 1960 and was still there when I left two years later. What a great job you are doing. Can you put out a trace for John Boyle who was Supply Sergeant for the 3rd from perhaps 1959 to 1964? Then there were CWO3 or 4 Gerald McCoy and CWO3 or 4 Hub Hulsey who ran the place when I was there. Phil Trinko was in X-Ray and he was living in Shawano, Wisconsin. I visited him there in the 1970’s but have not kept in touch with him. Out of the blue came your documents on the 3rd General Dispensary which was at Smiley Barracks when I was stationed there from October 1960 to October 1962. Would enjoy more information on the old place so please keep me on the mailing list. Chicago sounds good for a possible reunion in 2005. Dr. Donald Morton, December 31, 2003 Jack did speak with Dr. Bruce Fishburn in Billings and will try to talk him into coming to the next reunion. I hope it will be in Chicago as that is where Jack was born and he keeps promising to show me the town. Marianne Tolchin, December 30, 2003 Keep up the good stuff about the 3rd and the 761st. They are fond memories! Thanks for all of the newsletters. We received this (the Gerszewski info that was put together by Bruce Christman) and found it very interesting. There was a ton of stuff there that I never knew or ever would have found out. Hell, I feel like they’re almost neighbors now, being from North Dakota and all. Thanks for sharing this with us. Yours friends from the tundra, Wanted to let you know I got in touch with Jimmy Redd, by phone, I felt like I was in a time warp after 30 years. We are in the early stages of planning a road trip together, no date has been set, but we are only about 400 miles apart. I want to tell you how much I appreciate your efforts in all these areas. It is a real service to all the former members of the 3rd. Neil and Susan Woodworth were in Karlsruhe when I first arrived in Germany. Had many good times with them but just never kept in contact. What a waste. Jimmy Redd, November 18, 2003 ARM PITS are great!!! I’m looking forward to getting in touch with many other old friends, as well as making some new ones. It sounds as though people really enjoyed themselves. We had a great time in San Francisco. It was fun to see all the guys after 35 years. Maybe we can do it again in Chicago or wherever? It looks like you had a great time. It sounds like you guys had a good time getting together again after all this time. Keep me on your mailing list and let’s try to get together for a cold one soon. It is apparent that we really missed a great time in San Francisco. I’m not sure I can wait two years to do it again. I had a great time! That Saturday night dinner was the best meal my wife and I have ever eaten! I just find it hard to believe that after all these years, I would be reading about people who I had known 30 plus years ago. You should have been a detective or a bounty hunter…………..that was wild about Gerszewski. It is great to hear from you and make some of the old connections from Army days. You are certainly churning up the memories. I was originally stationed in Heilbronn just north of Stuttgart, but they needed a Lab Tech at the 761st so they sent me TDY in October 1965. By December I had been PCSd. Initially I bunked at Gerszewski Barracks and then when my family arrived I lived in Military Housing over at Smiley. I worked part time at the 3rd General Dispensary as they were short of Lab Techs and I volunteered to work there two to three days a week. The odds are better than 50/50 that I will be able to join you in San Francisco. Just let me know the details so I can plan. Is the Third General Dispensary the descendant from the Third Medical Dispensary, Karlsruhe Germany? Was stationed there 1953 – 1955. Was a medical tech (MOS 1123) and retired as a 91B5H MSG. If not the same group, good luck with the reunion. Lets just party down. I’m really looking forward to 2003 for this reunion of our friends we made in Karlsruhe. I truly hope that it comes to pass and all are able to attend that want to. I’ll be looking forward to this week’s ARM PIT. I appreciate all the e-mails, will not be able to attend reunion, but still enjoy all the news. We have a daughter getting married this summer and that limits our activities at this time. All the best to all you friends. Thank you so much for sending us all the newsletters and updates. Lou loves reading all the news. Your newsletters always put a smile on his face. Lou and I are looking forward to the next get together. Lou was sorry to read that Bill Weidner had died. He has fond memories of him. I find it hard to believe how many have passed away already. That’s gotta be really hard on you to get that close to contacting someone and get that news. Frank Motz and I were pretty close while there and that news really hurt. I am enjoying your communications. The reunion sounds like a lot of fun. It was a blast from the past talking to you! It was really great talking to you again. It’s hard to believe how much time has passed since we last talked. I’m looking forward to the newsletter and hope to find some time to go through some things that might be helpful in locating some of our other friends from that time. Would like to be part of next get together in San Francisco. Thanks for the memories. That was definitely a good time. I would be very interested in participating in reunions. Dr. Murry J. Cohen, June 20, 2002 Will definitely plan on seeing you next year. It looks like you all had a delightful time. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to join you. Word’s not adequate to describe "The mash re hash". Shame and pity on those who almost made it, but for various reasons, didn’t. Déjà vu, so good you can’t say, a fondness shared, all facets so fine, frog’s hair, large money’s and nirvana pale by comparison! Seems everyone is still buzzing over our reunion in Boston, including me. Looks like everyone had a great time at the reunion, sorry I missed it. Hope to catch the next one. We still cannot tell all of you how much Diane and I enjoyed seeing everybody, it was GREAT!! Again, it was really great seeing everybody. Hopefully more will be able to attend the next installment. I can only say that I agree 1000% with the others, WHY DID WE WAIT Soooooooo LONG????? LET’S DO IT AGAIN. The reunion was a definitive BLAST!!! I can’t describe it any other way. It was something to look forward to and now to remember for a long time. Or until the next one. Carl Sachjen, May 19, 2002 Already looking towards the next one. I’m still searching for the words to describe the feelings…… Maybe there aren’t any…………..unbelievable????? My wife and I had a great time – thanks for the Medic shirts! Wish we could have stayed longer. We played the CD on the way home several times and talked about the two days at length. Can’t wait for the next one!!! |
..………...Mr. & Mrs. Marty Bauer have put their house up for sale in Tempe, Arizona and are planning to move to Nashville, Tennessee so that they can be closer to their grandchildren……………Nashville? That sounds like a great place for a reunion one day too!…………..but first, 2009 - Find out where? (maybe) in the next issue……….did I tell you? Janet Carroll won a trip to Munich, Germany! She and "BC" will be going in late September just in time for the Octoberfest……………...last of the red hot salsas handed out at the 2007 San Antonio reunion was Kinky Friedman’s Black Hat Edition Black Bean & Corn Salsa. Kinky says "Great as dip straight from the jar, as a topping on baked potatoes, casseroles, or you could let your culinary imagination run wild. Thank you very much"……………. …………...ok, ok, ok, ok. So you have heard this before – and then Neil Woodworth said "We should have a reunion." Well how about five of them? It’s been Boston 2002, San Francisco 2003, Chicago 2005, San Antonio 2007, and now we begin planning our fifth reunion for next year. Wow!……Mr. Marty Bauer had quintuple by-pass surgery in October 2007. He’s doing really great reports Mrs. Marty Bauer………for those of you who were unable to attend the 2007 San Antonio Reunion we did give out another door prize at the Saturday night banquet. No it wasn’t a car this time, it was a FREE hunting trip with Dick Cheney - http://www.joeydevilla.com/2006/12/14/texas-monthlys-january-2007-cover/ ….. …and guess who won? None other than Mr. Conservative himself – Mike Knisley.……. once the final destination for the 2009 reunion is known we will need a few volunteers to serve on the Hotel Committee (to decide what hotel/motel we will stay) and for the Banquet Committee (to decide the Saturday night banquet menu), if you are interested in serving let me know – otherwise I’ll be "drafting" a few good people…..……..The Christmas Market in Karlsruhe opened its gates November 29th at the Marktplatz. During daylight hours, you can see some images under http://www.ka-news.de/webcams/marktplatz.php4…..how many of you received Kinky Friedman’s Private Stock Politically Correct Salsa and Dip? Kinky says he has seen liberals using it conservatively and conservatives using it liberally..…have presented all of the 2009 reunion locations given to me, does anyone have any other locations that they would like to nominate before winter arrives?…"and I fell out of bed, bursting my head, from things that I said" .……who wants to go back to Karlsruhe?………here is a link to photos of the Statdfest at the Karlsruhe Marktplatz on October 6, 2007 by Regis Shields,- WARP SPEED that was in "da third book"…….…...one of the things I have had in the back of my mind to do is to list the units that were stationed at Smiley Barracks and Gerszewski Barracks and the years that they were there and estimated troop strength for both places for any given year. That would be a task and a half and guess maybe I’ll tackle that when I retire….………...………how many of you remember the drownings that would occur during the summer months in Karlsruhe from guys swimming and diving at rock quarries?………from Carl H. Sachjen – the woman who operated the bowling alley on Smiley Barracks was Frau Karcher………R-E-S-P-E-C-T is earned, you can not give an order to respect someone…….this just in from The ARM PIT news wires - if you do a Google search for the "3rd General Dispensary Smiley Barracks" the 3rd General blogspot will come in at # 1!, try it…...For sure? For sure Karcher!.…..…………in our 3rd Round voting - San Antonio and Williamsburg were NOT the only locations receiving a half of a vote, in fact Williamsburg received THREE half votes, and Branson received TWO half votes. How did this happen you ask? Well it seems some of the spouses wanted to voice their own preference AND the PIT sure didn’t want to get in trouble with them did we…..as mentioned at our reunions – Today’s Army would not tolerate dismal leadership with the group we had to endure and they would be asked to resigned.….float like a butterfly and sting like a bee……………..to save you the trouble of having any identity theft problems from the recent Veterans Administration SNAFU, the PIT has decided to change each and everyone’s identities (you should know that I can do that right here from this computer) and Dennis Bradley will now be Bill Lokay, Bill Lokay is now Rodney Johnson, and Rodney Johnson is now Major "Mama" Cash, etc, etc………mmmmm, did Doc "Whatever you think is best" Sanders REALLY sign those letters of commendations for Tommie Parker or did someone we know in the Orderly Room sign them?....let me know if any of you want to join Jimmie and Vila Tyler for a round of golf at the next reunion……..always thought the folks in the Orderly Room had it pretty good, after all they worked behind a closed door and no one else ever wanted to be in there…for those of you who never met Montgomery, think of Humphrey Bogarts Lieutenant Commander (Captain) Philip Francis Queeg in The Cain Mutiny, that’s how insecure the Turd was (I have two statements from witnesses that I think will stand up in any court – "Why yes, Parker was "badmouthing" Sanders." Heck, we all know THAT is a court martial offense isn’t it?)……and the beat goes on, la de da de da…..…from Thomas Radke - here is another link some of you may want to check out sometime, the American Library at Smiley Barracks website: http://www4.karlsruhe.de/kultur/bibliotheken/stadtbibliothek/amerikanische_bib.en ……….unable to contact Curtis Meadows, Michael Bennett, and Robert Boone through the classmates web site…….yeah, with Fishburn, Wash, and Husband as the CO’s and XO it was a real joy to be at the 3rd. When they rotated and Sanders & Montgomery (and Major "Mama" Cash also) came in about October 1969 is when things soured……..…...and if you were scoring at home, Williamsburg had 20 points, Charleston 15, Las Vegas 12, San Antonio 10, Branson 9……….if you haven’t voted you have until June 15th to let me know which city you prefer for our 2007 reunion location. You can vote again if the city you voted for is no longer under consideration or you can change your vote if you desire, just let me know…...….Doc "Whatever you think is best" Sanders had a hard time making decisions while Montgomery handed out Article 15’s like candy canes……..........so Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?.....…..glad we were able to have a meal at The Berghoff Restaurant in Chicago, if you opened the link given in the last issue they have closed after being in business for 108 years!......here’s the link to Kenny Grants web site, enjoy - You can listen to GREAT RADIO programming at our Internet Radio Station AIR Jax. GO TO www.kegrant.com and click on LISTEN TO AIR Jax………. ………..starting in the next issue, the PIT will reprint (in eight installments) the complete story about the 3rd General Dispensary that was published in The Overseas Weekly on July 19, 1970 and was inserted into "da third book" that was handed out at Chicago……..……..recently tried to contact LeRoy Hairston once again from my work email, the email did go through but I haven’t received any response.…….Travis Easter, medic at the 3rd from 1991 to 1994, is now a Systems Project Manager with Johnson Controls….having found Dr. Don Bodeau we can now name someone who served at the 3rd for each year from 1953 to 1995, no missing links even if some of us DO look like the Missing Link!…..everyone has a story, send me your bio……..the attorney who represented the Cook Brothers and interviewed Dr. D and medics at the 3rd was Melvin M. Belli(http://www.smartlegaladvise.com/Belli.html).…for those of you who missed this link the first time it was in the PIT, here it is again http://www.knielingen.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=1180& ……………just a reminder – many will show up at these reunions not knowing anyone but since we have so much in common, that of serving in the U.S. Army, that of being in the medical corp, AND being stationed in Karlsruhe it is very easy to make friends quickly….…...kind of surprised that Cleveland, New Orleans, or St. Louis weren’t nominated……..Dales Bowes and Janet Giddens, who both attended the Chicago 2005 Reunion, were married February 22…….…guess the PIT will just have to have a episode of The Newlywed Game (http://timstvshowcase.com/newlywed.html ) soon…… .....believe they replace Gerri and myself as the newlyweds in our group (Gerri and I will celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary this year)……………..noticed a Kimberly (Ates) Davis, who was at the 3rd General Dispensary from 1989 to 1993, on the classmates.com web site…..………she is the 300th name added to our "Unit Roster"…..……..IF, everyone who has attended a reunion shows up in 2007, 44 people will attend!...................the Stagedoor Playhouse on Smiley Barracks was in the old EM Club next to the bowling alley. The military built a new EM Club off base in the early seventies……..........and speaking of the bowling alley, will include photos of Kasha who operated the bowling alley here in the PIT soon………and yes the military also built a new bowling alley off base to replace the four lane alley on Smiley…….………where do I get this stuff I put in the PIT? Why I get it from each of you! Stories, web sites, photos, ideas, thoughts, and leads about people we knew on Smiley and Gerszewski Barracks in Karlsruhe. Keep the stuff coming into the PIT, many folks enjoy reading and seeing what you may know or what you may have. Share it with us, and……"Open the pod bay doors HAL"……..……a few have mentioned that attending a reunion during the fall is not good for them so maybe we should meet next time during the spring or some other time…..photos from the Chicago reunion have been posted to the 3rd General Dispensary site on www.classmates.com ……the common denominator for all of us was mentioned in Dawn’s bio "have never met such great people since leaving (the 3rd General Dispensary in Karlsruhe)"……….how about this web site: http://stadtplan.karlsruhe.de that has detailed maps of Karlsruhe…..geez, where do I get all of this stuff?....…….How many of you remember Anneliese left Germany and came into the states in 1971 with a cast on her arm?.........also have extra copies of the CD MORE SONGS FROM THE BARRACKS if anyone wants one....…Neil and Susan Woodworth have moved back to New York state……………………………………Dr. Stanley Rosenblatt furnished two leads - Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Glantz in Encino, California and Dr. Alan and Sheila Minster in Lake Forest, Illinois. Did call Dr. Glantz and left a message on his answering machine and had previously mailed Dr. Minster a search package when Dr. Donald Morton provided a lead for him some time ago………………….speaking of Dr. Morton, Charles Miller promises to provide a photo of Dr. Morton wearing a cowboy hat…………called Dr. George Krye (another name provided by Ken Burrows) in Littleton, Colorado on June 24, 2005 and left a message on his answering machine but have not had a response to date....…………………….I’ll start taking nominations for the 2007 reunion location now until January 31, 2006 and announce them in a February issue of the PIT………………...Merry Christmas and here is your Christmas gift from the PIT, click this http://www.ka-news.de/webcams/marktplatz.php4 .......…..who used the ULC athletic facilities? That bird told me that Brian Carroll, Neil Woodworth, and Marianne Tolchin did……….start thinking of places to nominate for the next reunion location. I’ll ask for them early next year……….do you remember My Lai…….have a few copies of "da 3rd book" remaining should anyone want a copy………...Carl Sachjen identified the photo from the last issue KARLSRUHE TOUR as the end of one of the wings to the Schloss……...always thought the XO’s had it pretty good, after all they could always say "I have to go check (fill in any place here) out" and no one would miss them for the rest of the day…………so there I was, the first day being a medic after working in the Orderly Room for two years. This guy is bleeding all over me in the Emergency Room and I ask Dr. Sanders what should I do? I had forgot NOT to ask that of him. Of course Doc Sanders replied – "Whatever you think is best"..…………..do you remember being paid once a month and then "poof" your money was gone?.…….…….click on this for a brief Gerszewski Story - http://www.knielingen.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=1180& ………….Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz….…..recently contacted ten of our friends once again who have not been heard from in quite a while asking them to RE-UP for another year of receiving the PIT…………….Travis Easter responded and do hope that he will be able to join us at our next reunion……………….yes, that’s right, we will have another reunion as that was talked about in Chicago as to when and where we may meet again….….did receive many places to consider and I’ll start talking more about the next reunion soon……………have started to make monthly mailings of the PIT once again to those without computer access……...those of you with a computer should check out the 3rd General Dispensary blog at http://3rdGeneralDispensary.BlogSpot.com/ since the Smiley Barracks Tour is being told there as well as the search process that started during the summer of 2001…Jimmie Tyler and Bill Lokay gave me some photos that I will have scanned soon and share with you……..we also need to thank Dr. William H. Marshall, Dr. Henry Berman’s friend, who allowed us to stay at the Union League Club of Chicago as his guests …………always thought the medics had it pretty good, at least until Sanders caved in and let us be placed on the Smiley Barracks KP and Guard Duty rosters.…..….what was it that the officers said after they walked into a room and one of us would say attention? CARRY ON……have you checked out the web site for the 3rd General Dispensary at http://3rdGeneralDispensary.BraveHost.com/ and also the blog spot at http://3rdGeneralDispensary.BlogSpot.com/ …I see that Carl Sachjen, Katie Campbell, Phyllis Rose, and Dale Bowes has joined http://Groups.yahoo.com/group/Smiley_Barracks (the Smiley Barracks yahoo group)………Dr. Henry Berman says we may not recognize him since he lost weight using the "Atkins Diet"…...and Paul Strauser says you may not recognize him either since he has lost an ounce and a half using the "Rumble Diet" (you don’t eat your next meal until your stomach starts rumbling)……….Bob "Burgie" Burgeson said he was going to loose some weight before the next reunion, we shall see.………Marty Bauer has retired and moved to Tempe, Arizona with wife Marty…….…seems as if we have waited for ever for this reunion…….…93 pages were in "da book" for the Boston 2002 Reunion, 132 pages were in "da book – da sequel" for the San Francisco 2003 Reunion, and I count 127 pages for "da 3rd book" for the Chicago 2005 Reunion…..which reminds me, seen on "eBay" was "da book" from the Boston 2002 Reunion with a high bid of XXX....and this from Scott Bloom – the Stagedoor Playhouse was located on Smiley Barracks in 1973 and plays were produced by Frank Chapin using military personnel, dependents, and locals. The PIT has learned that this facility was located in the old EM Club on base and that a newer EM Club was built off base. Guess that was done to reduce the possibilities of having the performers visit with the ever friendly medics in the barracks…..if any of you are interested in participating in a "live" on line email chat one night, just let me know and I will try to set it up……………...how did you like the Lenny Kravitz remake of AMERICAN WOMAN…..heard from the Pope recently. Says he’s not going to be able to join us at the Chicago reunion but he does want to be on the distribution list of the PIT. Seems he likes the Karlsruhe Tour photos………………. …………..and since Lee Sanders reminded many of you of Frank Burns on the television series M*A*S*H, didn’t the officer in STRIPES played by John Larroquette remind you of 2 Lieutenant Montgomery?…………always thought the pharmacist had it pretty good, after all it was like having a fox guard the chicken house wasn’t it?……………..always thought the X-Ray Techs had it pretty good, after all they could hide in the developing room whenever they wanted to.……Can you dig it?
